The town of Stilfontein is situated 130km from Johannesburg and 180km from Mahikeng.
The town was established in 1949.
Greater Stilfontein forms part of the KOSH area (Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein, Hartebeesfontein). The development of gold mines was made possible by the perseverance of Jack Scott who discovered and developed the outcropping gold reef.
Stilfontein is renowned for its hospitality and excellent sports facilities, and hosts the annual Rose Festival in spring when the famous Stilfontein roses bloom.
Attractions include the Hartebeestfontein Gold Mine where one can witness a gold pouring session and join a mine tour.
A social community outreach and rehabilitation centre for miners and their families, offering mine tours, arts and crafts, including superb leatherwork. A troupe of young traditional dancers can be booked for special occassions.
