Attractions

Andrew Carnegie Library and City Hall

Two national monuments in Potgieter Street, the city hall has a clockwork and bells that were manufactured in the Netherlands.

Boskop Dam Nature Reserve

Boskop Dam is a popular angling and picnic site, about 25 km north of Potchefstroom, between Carltonville & Potchefstroom on the R501. Also favoured by yachting enthusiasts.

National Monuments

Potchefstroom offers a wealth of interesting architectural buildings dating back to the 1850’s when the town was a major centre serving the westernTransvaal farmlands and the diamond fields of the Northern Cape. These buildings, many of which have been declared national monuments, include the Old Gunpowder House, the Old Police Station Building, the Kruger Kraal Opstal, the Heimat building of the University of Potchefstroom and the Old Magistrates Office.

Oak Avenue

Oak Avenue is a 6,84km stretch of road lined with oak trees planted in 1910. The avenue is the longest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Oak Avenue s a national monument.

Old Fort, Museum and Cemetery

Remains of the old fort where British troops were besieged by Boer forces for 95 days during the South African War. Graves in the cemetery nearby.

Potchefstroom Museum

An interesting arts, culture and history museum, housed in the home of President Pretorius, the first state president of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek.

Excellent exhibits trace the history of the Potchefstroom region with fine ethnographic representation including an oxwagon from the Battle of Blood River. The museum houses a reference library and museum shop.

Food Cans for Xmas

The public library in the city of Potchefstroom appeals to the local community to assist in collecting 10,000 cans of food so that the poor, disabled and elderly do not go hungry during the festive season.

Nzimeni Xhalabile and Glen MosenogiAccording to Mr. Glen Mosenogi, a staff member at the library and co-ordinator of the annual project, cans will be collected until 9 December 2011. The library has 313 cans bought with money obtained from selling magazines in the library. Magazines are for sale at at R5.00 each.

The cans will be distributed on 15 December 2011 at the Potchefstroom Dam. The beneficiaries will come from 17 of the poorest wards in the Potchefstroom area. 20 people from each of these wards will be selected to receive cans. According to Mr Mosenogi, the library aims to collect a total of 10,000 cans for the 340 people.
