Day
Visitors
There is a well-established day visitor area with picnic
sites, washing-up facilities and ablutions for the many
day visitors who come to this beautiful park. Well grassed,
shady picnic sites are located close to the water and along
the game drives, with braai facilities provided. There is
a small shop at the entrance gate, which stocks small supplies
of tinned food, eggs, bread, cool drinks and beer. The other
two picnic areas, with limited facilities, are further away
from the main entrance. These are more suitable for birding.
Fishing
Fishermen are welcome to Borakalalo, but must possess a
valid licence and a daily permit, both of which are available
at the gate. The licence is valid for permitted waters in
North West Province for a year, while the permit is valid
for 24 hours for fishing at Borakalalo. Fishing is permitted
along a lengthy stretch of the dam shore, but no boating
or swimming is restricted as crocodiles reside in the dam.
Fishing is excellent and large catches can be expected
at the right time of year. Kurper (tilapia), carp and barbel
are abundant. Makriel, yellowfish and other species can
also be caught.
Bird Watching
Borakalalo is situated in prime bushveld habitat. Over
300 species have been recorded and a day trip in summer
can easily produce 120 species, which may include rarities
such as African Finfoot and Whitebacked Night Heron. A day
trip is usually sufficient to cover al the habitats in the
park, but make sure to be at the gate as it opens.
Other specials include Yellowbilled Stork, Lappetfaced
Vulture, Blackbreasted Snake Eagle, Bronzewinged Courser, Doublebanded Sandgrouse, Meyer's Parrot, Bennett’s Woodpecker,
Pied Babbler, Monotonous Lark, Burntnecked Eremomela and
Fantailed Flycatcher.
Habitats Include acacia woodland, Broadleaved woodland
in the north-eastern comer of the reserve, riverine bush
along the Moretele River, open grassland and sandy shores
along the Klipvoor Dam shoreline, and well wooded koppies. There
are a few hiking trails which can be hiked at one's own
risk (the risks including White Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus
and Leopard). There are bird hides on the Sefudi Dam and
along the Serolo loop.
The most birder friendly campsite is definitely Moretele,
camping on the banks of the Moretele River under the large
river Bushwillows with a limited number of campsites makes
it quiet and peaceful, and a lot of birds can be seen from
a chair in the camping area.
Self-guided
Walks
The visitor to Borakalalo is encouraged to enjoy the natural
environment. An attractive well-wooded area along the Moretele
is set aside for a number of self-guided walks. This day
walk area is beautiful, clean and peaceful...and we ask
you please to help us keep it that way.
Remember, there are white rhino and buffalo in the park
- you walk at your own risk.
General
Radios, TV's and tape recorders are not encouraged.
The shop at the gate stocks limited supplies of fishing
tackle and bait, wood and basic provisions.
The reserve is criss-crossed by a network of gravel roads
which are suitable for sedan cars.
A map can be obtained at the entrance gate.
