The North West Craft & Design Institute

NWCDI is to be the co-ordinating centre for the craft and hand-manufacturing sector in the North West Province. This includes providing targeted support to crafters and to organisations, assisting and developing craft resources and capacity. The intention is to create a sector that is vibrant, resourceful, self-sustaining and a net creator of employment.

Bambanani Sewing & Screen-Printing Project

Screen-printed and beaded cushions inspired by traditional Setswana carved designs are produced here. They use only neutral colours such as brown, black, cream and white. A CSIR supported project.

Bontle Pottery Project

This  is a community-based project to provide a viable income to combat poverty. Their focus is traditional Setswana pots. This is a CSIR supported project situated in the Lehurutshe district.

Bosele Paper-making Project

Visitors can watch Tswana cultural dance, music and gymnasium shows and purchase handmade paper products, ceramics, pottery and other craft items.  This CSIR supported project can be found in the Mmabana Cultural Centre, Lehurutshe.

Craft Planet

At the Royal Bafokeng Administration builing in Phokeng. Truly authentic South African fabrics that carry the name of the Craft Market are used to manufacture place-mats, cushions and wall-hangings. This  CSIR supported poject employs 12 people with skills in various textile operations.

Gaabo Motho Cultural Village

Hebron Village, Hebron

“Moeng goroga re je ka wena” Experience the courtesy of African tradition. The crafts people produce items in various indigenious traditions including Zulu, Venda and Ndebele. These items may include beadwork, grass mats and clay pots.
