The North West Craft and Design Insitute

NWCDI is to be the co-ordinating centre for the craft and hand-manufacturing sector in the North West Province.
This includes providing targeted support to crafters and to organisations, assisting and developing craft resources and capacity.
The intention is to create a sector that is vibrant, resourceful, self-sustaining and a net creator of employment.

Amogelang

Mmashiko Centre, Tsogo High School, Mmakau Village, next to Ga-Rankuwa. At Amogelang crafters are trained in producing recycled paper using local fibres, such as banana leaves.

Their equisitely colored paper is used for making gift bags, cards, picture frame, coater boxes and coasters of different shapes and sizes. Mmakau Village is 35km north of Pretoria, on the Marula Sun road.

Visitors can watch Tswana cultural dance, music and gymnasium shows and purchase handmade paper products, ceramics, pottery and other craft items.

At the Royal Bafokeng Administration builing in Phokeng.

Truly authentic South African fabrics that carry the name of the Craft Market are used to manufacture place-mats, cushions and wall-hangings. This  CSIR supported poject employs 12 people with skills in various textile operations.

PAP – People Alleviating Poverty – is a Non Profit Organization committed to skills training aimed at enhancing the ability to generate an income as well as creating job opportunities. Pap is the basic food of Africa and by developing inherent capabilities and utilizing 100% natural elements, PAP ensures that there is food on tables.
A dedicated team of young people have developed skills which contribute to the production of an appealing range of organic, hand crafted jewelry, fashion accessories, wall sculptures and lamps that makes use of natural elements such as the Calabash, various seeds, pods, thorns and wood as well as recycled, organic materials.

These tribe members focus on the traditional Tswana crafts.

Mabhoko Cultural Village

Between the Winterveld area and Klipgat in the North West Province. Women use their beadwork skills to create beaded glassware, jewellery, serviette rings and other decor items.

They also produce beaded company logos, aids pins; Zulu love letters and other traditional bead items.

Mmabana Centre

The Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation’s mission is to provide art education and to nurture and develop appreciation for South African culture. It is a one-stop tourist attraction for those interested in arts, culture and sports in various towns around North West.

Monkey Puzzle Prints

This workshop, tucked away in the Magaliesberg mountains, specialises in hand-printed and painted textiles. Items are skilfully made by local women, using a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The large range include tablecloths, napkins, soft furnishings and linen.

At the Serobe Pottery situated in Phokeng, Lerato, potters, under the guidance of master sculptor Secret Rangak, turn out. High-quality ceramic and clay products such as vases, planters, oil-lamps and kitchenware.

Thusanang Development and Training

The Thusanang Project assists rural women with training and job-creation initiatives. The focus is on handcrafts, including embroidered linen, mohair blankets, bed covers and beautiful handmade paper products. It can be found in the Learn to Earn Centre in Klerksdorp.

This CSIR supported project in the Winterveldt uses reed, mealie husks and recycled paper to produce paper products. These products include greeting cards, coloured envelopes, gift bags, wine boxes, stationery sets and conference folders.

Over 400 crafters from the surrounding area of Tosca make handwoven African wild silk products such as scarves, shalws, yarrns and other decor items. This CSIR supported project is 70 km from Tosca.

Winterveldt Jewellery Project

This project is situated on the premises of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry in Winterveldt. They produce beaded jewellery inspired by Venda and Tsonga traditions. The group consists of 20 members between the ages of 20 and 25. This project forms part of the CSIR supported projects
